Thiruvananthapuram
Kovalam Beach , Thiruvananthapuram
Just 16 km away from Thiruvananthapuram, the Kovalam Beach is one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in India. The crescent shaped beach is thronged by tourists throughout the year. The palm-fringed shores, the azure seas and the beachside restaurants serving delectable seafood dishes make it the perfect setting for a wonderful holiday.
Varkala , Thiruvananthapuram
Famous for its Papanasam Beach, Varkala is a popular tourist hub. It is also a Hindu Pilgrimage centre as a dip in the waters of this beach is believed to wash away one’s sins. The small beach which is flanked by rocky cliffs on either side doesn’t take long to be explored. Sivagiri Mutt, considered to be the final resting place of spiritual guru, Sree Narayana Guru, is also nearby.
Thiruvananthapuram Beach
Location: (6 km north of Kollam. Open 0500 – 1130 hrs, 1600 – 2030 hrs) This secluded beach is a beautiful picnic centre. About one and a half kilometre into the sea is the Nyarazhcha Para, literally Sunday Rock, that can be seen from the shore at low tide. And near the beach is a Mahavishnu Temple.
Veli , Thiruvananthapuram
Veli is a tourist village situated 8 km away from Trivandrum. Bordered by lagoons and the Arabian Sea, the village has a waterfront park which is quite popular among the tourists. The park has a few joy rides such as motor safaris, power boats, pedal boats or row boats. One can even enjoy kayaks and hovercrafts. There is a floating bridge and a floating restaurant too. The village is open every day; boat rides are available till 6.00 p.m. One can interesting sculptures designed by the well-known sculptor Kanai Kunjiraman in the village.
Shanghumugham Beach , Thiruvananthapuram
This place is famous for a 35 m long sculpture of a mermaid that is placed on the beach. The beach is located 8 kms from Thiruvananthapuram city and is adjacent to the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport. An idyllic weekend getaway, this expansive sandy beach can accommodate tens of thousands of people at one go. A large, enticing mermaid sculpture – ‘Matsya Kanyaka’ (35 m long) greets visitors. During temple festivals, Shanghumugham beach witnesses ritual washing of temple idols. Primary a fishing village, you can catch a glimpse of fishermen roping in their daily catch. The water here, however, is not suitable for bathing. A restaurant in the shape of a star fish is another attraction.
Kozhikode
Beach Road , Kozhikode
A tract of 3 km across the beach, this avenue remains deserted and quiet during the day. The aquarium at the North end of the road draws visitors occasionally. The place comes alive in the evening when people venture out for a stroll across the beach. Vendors selling peanuts, snacks and ice creams can be seen. You can also take a walk across the beach road course to the Dolphin’s Point during dawn to get a glimpse of the leaping dolphins.
Beypore Beach
Located at the mouth of the Chaliyar River in Kozhikode district, Beypore, is one of the prominent ports and fishing harbours of Kerala. Ancient Beypore was much sought after by merchants from Western Asia, for its ship building industry. The boat building yard here is famous for the construction of the Uru, the traditional Arabian trading vessel. The Beypore Beach has a bridge built nearly 2 kms into the sea. It is actually made up of huge stones piled together for nearly 2 kms making a pathway into the sea.
Kappad Beach
It is believed that the Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama landed on this beach with his team of explorers, thus giving it a place on the world map. The beach, calm and quiet, is an ideal place to relax. The best way to visit this beach is by taking a backwater cruise.
Ernakulam
Fort Kochi
The Fort Kochi beach with its Chinese fishing nets and wonderful sunsets is a place you must visit when you are in Kochi. A colourful carnival on the New Years Eve attracts a number of tourists to the beach. Watch the fishing folk coming to the shore with prized catches or see the Chinese nets surfacing with an assortment of fishes. You can even get roadside restaurateurs cook these catches for you the way you like! Take a stroll along the lovely beach or race with the crabs; watch the waves and feel totally at bliss
Cherai Beach
45 kms from the city of Cochin, this lovely beach bordering Vypeen Island is ideal for swimming. Dolphins are occasionally seen here. A typical Kerala village with paddy fields and coconut groves nearby is an added attraction.
